Next Monday we will be going on our first field trip. We will be going up Cedar Canyon, our first stop will be at the Water Shed, we will have a discussion on how the water is treated and the plants that are found in the transition land zone. Our next stop will be Woods Ranch, more discussions on the deciduous forest land zone and a walk around kids pond. Our last stop will be Navajo Lake, we will eat lunch here and then have our final discussion on the coniferous land zone and scholars will have a chance to look for frogs in the wetlands at the end of the lake. This tends to be a muddy field trip. Please send your scholar with rain boots or a pair of shoes that you are okay with them getting muddy and a bag in put them in when we are finished. A water bottle, small snack and extra socks are a good idea. The only bathrooms will be at Woods Ranch, camp grounds and bathrooms will be closed at Navajo Lake.
Curriculum News:
- Literacy - Unit 1 of CKLA, personal narratives and literary devices. Scholars are practicing writing literary devices (similes, metaphors, hyperboles, alliterations, idioms) and their own personal narratives. We are learning procedures for Independent time which will consist of Read to Self, Writing, and Word Work so that they will be ready for Independent work when we start small groups.
- Math - Monday; graph scores from chapter 1 and go over the test. Some scholars will continue to get small group time to practice concepts not mastered on the test. The most missed problems were adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. We will also do lesson 2.1 which is on multiplication comparisons. (Many of the lessons in this chapter will also be focusing on operations of algebra, 4.OA.) Tuesday; 2.2 comparison problems. Wednesday; 2.3 multiply tens, hundreds, and thousands. Thursday; 2.4 estimate products. Friday, 2.5 multiply using the distributive property. This is an exciting chapter where scholars are able to learn the "why" behind multiplying 1-digit by multiple digits. Some of our methods might not look familiar to you, please be patient with me and please work on times table facts at home. Flash cards work the best.
- Science - Interdependence, that is the word we talked about on Friday. The web of life. This week we will focus on wetlands of Utah and deserts.
